4th Year YW Hike

Brit and I got called to do the 4th year hike with the Young Women of the Prescott Valley Stake.  We were very excited to take on this task and to serve with another couple of our Ward, Sheri and Taylor Nelson.  We picked to hike on the Rim.  When we talked to people about our calling people were telling us to not plan our hike too long since most of the girls we were hiking with probably never hiked before so don't make it too hard on them.  My Sister-in-law got called in her stake to help with their 4th year hike and they only hiked 1 mile and another person that did it previously in their Stake had a truck that carried the equipment to lighten the girls packs.  So we really didn't know what to expect.  We wanted to put on a hike that would be memorable for the Young Women and to make them struggle a little so they can learn something about themselves.  Our theme of our hike was "In the strength of the Lord I can do hard things."  So we had the girls hike in all their equipment, food, and everything they would need during their stay.  Our hike consisted of 5 1/2 miles in and 3 miles out the second day.  We were so surprised how well the girls did! They were so amazing!  There was just a few girls that struggled a little but most of them were rockstars!  They hiked in and ate freeze dry food and they were all surprised how great it tasted!  Here are a few pictures during our hike.

We pumped/filtered water from a stream.  The girls learned the importance of being prepared especially with water.  We had one girl show up with her pack and packed no water.  Good thing the leaders were prepared!
 Sheri and I
We camped near this old forest service cabin.

We had a fireside that night which was spiritually uplifting.  It was great to see the girls open up and share their testimony!
On the hike out we came upon a Scout Troop that was from Gilbert that had a zip line set up.  They let all the girls go on it.  It was a great way to finish out our hike.  We ended up having 18 girls on the hike.  It was so much fun to see the girls grow and learn about themselves in such a short amount of time.  Many of them wanted to do another overnight hiking trip.  I hope I get this calling again!  Thanks Sheri and Taylor for making such a memorable experience for us!
